The Skylight Project

Let us begin with the pretty pictures shall we? I was noodling around last night with this cool tool box sweet husband made as a kid for his mom. It weighs eleventy-hundred pounds empty so it never got used, but I thought it made a great place to play around with a holiday display. So I pulled out the bag 'o trees I bought after Christmas last year on clearance, and along with some glittery snow, candles and tiny pinecones I picked up on a walk, I put together this cute little forest.

Sweet hubby was noodling around too and I lovingly said, "honey, when you get a chance will you bring some of the Christmas decorations down from the attic?"  Being the great guy he is, he agreed to do that toot sweet and headed up the stairs.  Now ladies, we have an unfinished attic and there is a reason I don't like to go up there.  No floor. Just some boards nailed in a path to the shelves that hold the decorations.  Just one little mis-step and I am sure I would come right through the dining room ceiling. I think you know where I am going with this......
Check out our new skylight.

He is fine. He managed not to fall through completely and truth be told I was far more worried about him than I was the ceiling.  He just banged up his ankle and ribs but nothing that even bruised, I am so thankful!  But we are hosting Thanksgiving next week and golly this is going to mess up my decorating scheme! You can't believe how much dust and blown in insulation came down. It was everywhere!  It filled a huge trash can (don't act like you never keep chicken wire in your dining room, I know you do!.... Right?)

You might think I would be upset. I'm not. This was an old plaster ceiling and it had cracks that were driving me crazy. I get a new ceiling ladies and crown moulding to boot:>) Always look at the silver lining. The family won't care a bit that there is a hole in the ceiling, we just like to be together and I know we will all have a good laugh about it.  I think I'll call the insurance and see what they can do, but we have a big deductible so we may end up fixing this ourselves. Now I need to take everything out of the dining room that is glass, breakable or decorative because whether we do it ourselves or have it fixed by someone else, everything will have to be moved.  It might be a good thing to start fresh anyway. Never a dull moment...*sigh*

  1. OH MY GOSH Kathy.......
    Thank God hubby is ok!
and that you have a great sense of humor......

I know the mess way too well...when we lived in the old farmhouse the old plaster ceiling fell in the middle of the night and we woke up to what sounded like a train coming thru the wall and a huge cloud of hundreds year old dust and insulation!

The dust stayed in the air for weeks!

    God Bless you girl....

  3. Reminds me of a Thanksgiving when I was young. My dad agreed to do some electrical work in my aunt's attic and one slip and he was in the same situation. Skylight and dust and debris everywhere. He wasn't hurt but I do remember the mess. So glad you can see the 'bright spot' in the situation. And you will enjoy your new ceiling and crown molding, I'm sure. ~Adrienne~

  5. OMG He is soooo lucky he didn't get hurt!
The ceiling in the living room of the duplex next to my daughter's place came down with that type of insulation in too. What a mess!
Looks like you have it all cleaned up so well done.

  7. OMG.... I totally get the attic situation. We just went through this whole thing and finally decided to do something about it. I am absolutely loving this new space. We ended up putting a door in the back of a closet to walk right in. Then just plywood flooring....

Here is a link to a past post of the project.

You won't be sorry if you go this directions. We are both getting too old to go through the ceiling. Glad to hear the hubbie is OK.

  13. So I want to know what color the dining room is going to be now? I know you won't be able to resist painting once you have the room emptied out anyhow.

Glad Earl is ok. Didn't Unc go through a ceiling at work once, years ago? I think he fell completely through-do you remember?

I know he is sore...this happened to someone I know.
Well, I'm excited for the new ceiling!

  30. I LOVE your cute little forest! Sorry about your ceiling. Guess it was bound to happen sooner or later. Maybe that would be a good after-dinner exercise project for everyone who you're having over on Thanksgiving. Instead of a barn raising, you can have a "ceiling raising!"

  31. Kathy,
Nice skylight that your DH designed, but I think I might choose another way to install it.
Its always good not to get upset over these things because the thing itself is upsetting enough.
Always enjoy seeing what you are up to.

  35. Oh Kathy.......OUCH....that is just not good. Your poor Hubbs....I'm glad he didn't come crashing through..... Fortunately you had that big garbage can underneath that exact spot to catch that nasty debris.... ;-)

Eleventy hundred pounds? Oh that made me laugh....I'm sure I've heard that number before.

Your little box is just tooo cute. My daughter does that kind of thing....Now I know I HAVE to too!

  36. My hubby did the exact same thing! I was away and he calls me and says "Honey, a couple of limbs fell through the ceiling during the ice storm." He fixed the hole before I got home and I am all concerned about the roof of the house! He had this huge grin on his face and I KNEW which limbs he ment. He came through the livingroom ceiling and landed on top of my china hutch. Missed all of the Santa's, did not knock over a piece of china (or so he says) and did not get hurt at all. I can still see the cracks. Maybe I will pull up your post and show him what you were rewarded with...lol

  37. Oh my golly, Kathy! I really can imagine what the dust was like. It's awful, I know. Hooray for the silver lining and hubby not being hurt. I love the phrase 'toot sweet.' I'm adopting it for when I need hubby to do something-- Honey, could you (fill in the blank) for me, and do you think um maybe you could do it toot sweet? I know it will work!

Wishing you and your family a very blessed Thanksgiving, Kathy.
